Cruising the Canal de Briare: a Barger’s Delight

Cruising the Canal de Briare: a Barger’s Delight

The picturesque Canal de Briare, which connects the valleys of the Seine and the Loire, is notable for a number of reasons apart from the delightful scenery through which it wends its way. A popular route for both private and commercial cruising vessels, the canal is renowned as one of the loveliest places for a barge holiday in France as well as being a highly impressive feat of engineering.
A Pioneering History

The canal is one of the country’s oldest manmade waterways, built between 1602 and 1642 under the patronage of Henry IV. When first constructed, it linked directly into the Loire at Montargis, but later in the nineteenth century the building of the famous Briare Aqueduct created a bypass to La Cognardière, 2.6km away. Despite its name, the aqueduct actually forms part of the Canal latéral à la Loire.

An Engineering Triumph

The canal was also the first to be constructed at summit level using “pound locks”, which feature a chamber with gates at either end to control the height of the water within. (Before then locks were created with a single gate.) A summit level canal first rises and then falls along its course, and in the case of the 57km Canal de Briare, it rises through 12 locks before falling through another 24 on an 85m descent.

During construction a number of artificial lakes were created in order to feed water into the locks. At the most precipitous location, Rogny, it was necessary to build what was in effect a “staircase” of seven locks in order to navigate the fall of the canal. While it was without a doubt an outstanding feat of engineering, the design caused huge hold-ups as each vessel had to navigate all seven locks before the next was able to pass through. In the end the staircase of locks was abandoned and the canal re-routed to bypass them, but the town was later renamed Rogny-les-Sept-Ecluses in their honour.

Attractions en Route

Along with the locks at Rogny-les-Sept-Ecluses, the many other attractions along the course of the canal make it a popular route for the itinerary of a barge holiday in France. In Montargis, one of the most renowned local businesses to have put this pretty town on the map is the Mazet Praline Shop. The confectioner still makes its praline treats to the recipe of founder, Leon Mazet, who opened the shop in 1903. As well as a range of chocolates and other delicacies, the shop is famous for its signature caramelised almond, the Prasline Mazet de Montargis.

Situated in the commune of Saint-Fargeau, the magnificent seventeenth-century Renaissance-style Château de Saint Fargeau is the cultural centrepiece of the region, with its chequered history dating back some one thousand years. Its present distinctive pentagonal construction surrounded by six imposing towers is built on top of an original fortress commissioned by Héribert, son of King Hugh Capet. Even though it is privately owned, many parts of the castle are open for public visitation.

From Ancient Trade to Modern Leisure

For many centuries the Canal de Briare existed as an important channel to transport coal, wood, wine and other supplies from the Loire Valley to Paris. Today, this beautiful waterway serves as one of the most appealing locations to explore on a barge holiday in France.

Paul Newman is the Marketing and E-Systems Executive for European Waterways, the UK’s most respected provider for those looking for an all-inclusive, luxury barge holiday in France or other great destinations in Europe. Part of a team of experienced barging aficionados, Paul is first in line to endorse the perks of a slow-paced barge cruise to anyone looking for a unique holiday experience.

In many states around the country, termites are a problem for residential and commercial property owners. Termites are small insects that can slip into a building unnoticed and create a large colony quickly, then cause irreversible damage. Luckily, with knowledge about these pests comes power. Being aware of what they look like, how to tell when they’ve invaded your property, and learning about termite control methods in Macon, GA, will put you on the right track to ensuring that termites don’t cost you money and time.

Termites Cause Major Monetary Damage

4 Facts You Probably Don’t Know about Termites  4 Facts You Probably Don’t Know about Termites
Every year, termites cost countries millions of dollars in damage to property and crops. Termites are efficient at digesting organic matter. If they get into the wood siding or supports of a building, they can eat away from the inside out before you notice that anything’s wrong. With crops, if food isn’t stored property, termites can also digest it and make the products unsuitable for selling or human consumption.

Termites Are Most Active in Warm Temperatures

Termites love warm weather and are active in most states where they live year round. The temperature in an area will help determine how much damage they can do. When they are comfortable, they expend all their energy digesting organic material.

Termites Tunnel

One of the surest ways to determine whether you have a termite infestation is to look around the base of your building for small holes. You can also dig into the ground. If you see hollow pipes that look as thick in diameter as a coffee straw, it’s a pretty good sign that you have a termite colony nearby.

Winged Termites Mean Trouble

In the spring, colonies of termites send out scouts. These are termites with delicate wings. It’s incredibly difficult to spot a termite in mid-flight, but you can look at spider webs around your yard to see if anything that looks like a flying ant is caught. If you find some, the sooner you figure out local termite control methods in Macon, GA, the better! It’s sure that there’s a colony in your immediate vicinity.

If the only thing you think about when someone mentions Scottish food is Martian rock and fried macaroni baked into a pie crust, you’ll be surprised by Scottish cruises. On our way down the Caledonian Canal, our on-board chef likes to celebrate excellent local cuisine and – I promise – there will not be a visible Mars Bar.
Of course, in a country with a river full of wild salmon, huge estates filled with deer, sheep and cattle (other than for grouse birds, pheasants and forest donkeys), it is ridiculous to imagine that the night chip shops in the cities offer the best. of his cooking. Our Scottish voyage down the canal – which runs from Inverness in the east to Fort William in the west – meandering through some of Scotland’s most beautiful and lush countryside, with access to some of its freshest local materials. Suitable Material for Royalty

Traditionally, the British and Scottish aristocracies have looked to the rural parts of Scotland to provide some of its most exclusive materials. Whether it’s tasty venison or Aberdeen Angus, fresh salmon from the river or lobster, crabs, shellfish, shellfish and shrimp caught offshore, Scotland has long been considered the closet for the top tables of the British Isles. .

Scotch fare is warm

But not just the rich and famous people who have enjoyed the wealth of good food on offer north of the border. Traditional Scottish dishes such as haggis, Scotch broth, and Cullen skink are all well-known around the world.

Many visitors to Scotland are a bit intimidated by what might be considered a national dish of the country: haggis. It is made from liver chopped liver, liver and oatmeal all mixed together with various herbs before put into the stomach of the lamb. It may sound too intriguing, but believe me there is a good reason why the Scots eat this delicious. If you are feeling adventurous try it – it is really delicious served with custom neeps and tatties (mashed horseradish flavored or potato rolls and mashed potatoes with nutmeg). Once you have found haggis love, you may want to try the sausage as well.

Another rustic treatment worth a try while you’re on your Scottish voyage is a traditional haddock soup known as the Cullen skink. Made from smoked haddock, onions and potatoes, this is warming up after a brush with Scottish weather. For a warmer stew that looks more like a stew, try the Scotch broth. Traditionally made with goat meat, but now often found using lamb, soup is removed with barley and fresh root vegetables. Try this famous soup, or any other Scottish dish, served with traditional local bannocks (stove bread made from grains) or oatcakes (savory biscuits made from wheat flour).

On your Scottish voyage you will find that Scottish food is, like a landscape, honest, healthy and rustic – it makes a wonderful discovery, filled with unexpected taste.
